Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<h2>When and how to appear before a judge without an attorney<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s altogether possible for people to defend themselves in court without a lawyer, whether in civil, family or criminal cases. This happens most commonly when filing for divorce, alimony or child support or in the event of a civil action or criminal prosecution. However, if you\u2019re appearing in court on behalf of a company or an organization, an attorney must accompany you.<\/p>\n<p>Going to court without a lawyer is no simple matter, as it requires careful preparation to ensure that you\u2019ve mastered every aspect of your defense, especially when the accusations could have a major impact on your life, as is often the case in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avocatecriminaliste.ca\/en\/criminal-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminal law<\/a>. This doesn\u2019t amount to giving you a course in law, but rather simply ensuring that you understand the ins and outs of the process.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, in the interests of fairness to the other party, the judge may not do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assume the role of an attorney<\/li>\n<li>Advise you or show any favoritism toward you<\/li>\n<li>Diminish the impact of any evidence related to your case<\/li>\n<li>Acquit you of your legal obligations<\/li>\n<li>Present evidence or question witnesses on your behalf<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If at any point over the course of the proceedings you realize that defending yourself is too complicated or that your inexperience could work against you, you can change your mind and hire a lawyer.
